Removing old Door Hardware correctly is less about using force and more about understanding how each component is fixed to the door. Start by checking what is actually installed on the door. A typical door may contain a lever handle, Mortise Lock, cylinder, latch, hinge, door bolt, stopper, or security accessory.
Some handles have visible fixing screws. Others hide the screws behind a decorative rose or cover plate. Mortise locks usually require the handle and cylinder to be removed before the lock body can slide out from the edge of the door.
Before touching the screws, take several photos. They provide a useful reference when measuring the existing old door hardware and selecting replacements later.

Avoid using a metal screwdriver as a pry bar against a finished door. A plastic tool is less likely to damage paint, veneer, or decorative surfaces.
When the hardware has been painted around repeatedly, lightly score the paint line before lifting a cover plate. This prevents surrounding paint from peeling away with the hardware.
For a lever handle, locate the set screw or release point and loosen it before pulling the lever away. Remove the rose cover and unscrew the mounting plate beneath it.
Next, remove the spindle and the corresponding handle from the opposite side.
For a mortise lock, remove the handles first, followed by the cylinder or thumb turn where applicable. Unscrew the faceplate on the door edge and carefully slide the lock body out of the mortise.
When removing hinges, support the door before loosening the screws. Do not allow the full weight of the door to hang from the final hinge. This is especially important with large or heavy doors.
