Installing a deadbolt lock requires accurate drilling, correct backset selection, solid strike reinforcement, and smooth alignment between the bolt and door frame. A poorly positioned deadbolt may bind, fail to extend fully, or create a false sense of security even when the lock itself is well made.
Before cutting the door, confirm that the deadbolt matches the door thickness, material, handing requirements, bore pattern, and local building rules. Fire-rated, security-rated, metal, glass, and egress doors should be handled according to the approved door system, often by a qualified installer.
Most bored residential locks are designed around common backsets, but dimensions vary by market and product. The backset is the distance from the door edge to the center of the main bore.

Do not place the deadbolt so close to another lock that the two bores weaken the door edge or interfere with internal hardware.
Use the supplied template rather than estimating. Fold or position it against the door edge, mark the center of the large face bore, and mark the bolt bore on the edge.
Check both marks with a square. A small error at this stage can make the bolt sit at an angle and rub against the strike.
Secure the door to prevent movement. Use the hole-saw size specified by the lock manufacturer and drill perpendicular to the door face.
To reduce splintering on a timber door, stop when the pilot bit appears on the opposite side and complete the cut from that side. Metal doors may require suitable cutting tools and may already contain reinforced lock-preparation areas. Avoid cutting an unprepared metal or fire-rated door without checking its construction.
Drill the edge bore so it meets the face bore cleanly. Insert the bolt and trace the faceplate if a recessed installation is required.
Remove only enough material for the faceplate to sit flush. A mortise that is too deep can pull the bolt out of alignment when the screws are tightened.
The bolt should be oriented correctly according to its marking. Some adjustable bolts must be set to the required backset before assembly.
Slide the exterior cylinder or trim through the door and engage its tailpiece with the bolt mechanism. Position the interior thumb turn and tighten the through-bolts evenly.
Do not overtighten. Excessive force can distort the trim, compress the door surface, or make the thumb turn difficult to operate.
Test the deadbolt with the door open. The bolt should extend and retract without scraping or requiring the key to be forced.
Close the door gently and mark where the bolt meets the frame. Drill the bolt pocket deep enough for full extension, then install the strike plate squarely.
Security depends heavily on the frame and strike attachment. Suitable long screws into structural framing can provide better resistance than short screws fixed only into thin trim, but the fastener size and location must suit the complete door assembly.
Test the lock from both sides with the door open and closed. Confirm that:
The bolt extends fully
The key turns without binding
The thumb turn moves smoothly
The door does not need to be pushed or lifted
The strike does not force the bolt sideways
The latch and deadbolt operate independently
Never close the door for the first full test without keeping another access route available.

A deadbolt works correctly only when the cylinder, bolt, strike, door, and frame function as one system. Precise preparation and full bolt engagement matter more than simply making the hardware fit into the door.
