The four most common door lock categories are cylindrical or tubular locks, Mortise Locks, deadbolts, and electronic or smart locks. Each serves a different combination of security, access control, installation depth, appearance, and serviceability.

A passage latch without a locking function should not be confused with an entrance lock, and a connected smart lock is not automatically more resistant to physical attack than a properly specified mechanical system. Door type and application must guide the selection.

1. Cylindrical and Tubular Locks

Cylindrical and tubular locks are widely used because bored-door preparation can make installation relatively efficient. The handle or knob operates a spring latch, and different functions provide passage, privacy, storeroom, classroom, or entrance control.

These locks are not all built to the same duty level. High-traffic commercial doors require different cycle performance, construction, and servicing capability from a light residential bedroom lock.

Before ordering, confirm the function carefully. Two products can look identical while responding differently from the inside, outside, or after key operation.

2. Mortise Locks

A mortise lock places a substantial case inside a prepared pocket in the door edge. The case may combine a latch, deadbolt, follower, and other mechanisms.

Mortise systems are common in hotels, offices, public buildings, and premium residential projects because they support many functions and trim designs. Their performance depends on accurate door preparation and dimensional matching.

3. Deadbolts

A deadbolt uses a solid bolt that does not retract through simple spring pressure. It is commonly installed above a latch lock or incorporated into a mortise system.

Single-cylinder versions normally use a key outside and a thumb turn inside. Double-cylinder versions require a key on both sides, but they can delay emergency exit and may be restricted by local rules. Egress requirements must be checked before specifying them.

Strike attachment and frame construction are critical. A strong bolt connected to a weak frame cannot deliver the expected protection.

4. Electronic and Smart Locks

Electronic locks may use keypads, cards, mobile applications, fingerprints, facial recognition, or networked access platforms. Many retain a mechanical lock body and emergency override.

They provide convenience and access-management options, but introduce additional considerations:

  • Administrator permissions

  • Credential deletion

  • Emergency mechanical access

  • Encryption and password policy

  • Network reliability

  • Compatibility with door preparation

Cylindrical locks suit standardized bored-door programs. Mortise locks are useful when project-grade functions, trim flexibility, and integrated mechanisms are required. Deadbolts add controlled bolt security, while smart locks support managed or keyless access.

Hotel rooms may prioritize audit and credential management. Apartment entrances need security and reliable egress. Internal offices may focus on master-key control, while public buildings require hardware compatible with accessibility and fire-safety rules.
