A 90° shower door hinge is commonly used where a glass door connects to a wall or a fixed glass panel at a right angle. A 180° shower door hinge is used where the door and adjacent fixed glass are arranged in the same straight line. The correct angle is determined by the glass layout, not by personal preference alone.

Selecting the wrong hinge angle can create uneven gaps, restricted movement, poor seal contact, or an installation that cannot be completed safely.

When Is a 90° Hinge Used?

A 90° hinge works with corner-style layouts. Depending on its specific design, it may connect glass to a wall or connect two glass panels positioned at right angles.

This arrangement appears in rectangular shower enclosures, corner entries, and layouts where the fixed panel returns from a wall. The hinge body and clamping plates must match the intended glass-to-wall or glass-to-glass connection.

When Does a 180° Hinge Work Better?

Our 180-degree shower door hinge is constructed from stainless steel or brass. The listed load capacity for a single hinge is 35–40 kg, but the number of hinges must be calculated using the complete door height, width, thickness, and manufacturer’s installation requirements.

A load figure should never be used alone to approve a glass door.

How Does the Layout Affect Opening Direction?

The bathroom must provide enough clearance for the door to open without hitting a basin, toilet, towel rail, wall, or other glass panel. Seal position and threshold design also influence whether the door should open inward, outward, or both ways.

The drawing should identify:

  1. Fixed glass position

  2. Door width and height

  3. Glass thickness

  4. Hinge connection type

  5. Opening direction

  6. Handle position

  7. Waterproof seal location

  8. Floor and wall clearance

  9. Glass cutouts and holes

  10. Required closing behavior

Glass must be ordered only after hardware drawings and hole locations have been confirmed. Tempered glass cannot be safely drilled or cut after tempering.

Why Gaskets and Fasteners Matter

Glass hinges clamp the panel through metal plates and protective gaskets. The gasket separates the hardware from the glass and helps distribute pressure.

Incorrect gasket placement, excessive tightening, misaligned holes, or direct metal-to-glass contact can create concentrated stress. Installation should be completed by technicians experienced with frameless shower glass.
