What Are The Door Lock Parts Called?

2026-07-08

Door lock parts have different names depending on the lock type, door structure, and installation method. A simple interior latch may only include a handle, latch bolt, strike plate, and screws, while a mortise lock or smart lock may include more internal and external components.

Knowing the correct part names helps buyers communicate clearly with suppliers, installers, and project teams. It also reduces mistakes when ordering replacement parts, customized locksets, or complete Door Hardware packages.

Lock Body

The lock body is the main internal mechanism installed inside the door edge or inside the lock case. It controls how the latch, bolt, handle, cylinder, and thumbturn work together.

In a mortise lock, the lock body is fitted into a rectangular pocket cut into the door. In a tubular latch, the mechanism is simpler and usually installed through a round bore. The lock body must match the door thickness, backset, handle type, and required function.

Our door lock system range includes mortise locks, latches, smart locks, cylinders, and related locking components for residential, hotel, office, and project applications.

Latch Bolt

The latch bolt is the spring-loaded part that keeps a door closed after it is pushed shut. When the handle is turned, the latch retracts and allows the door to open.

Most latch bolts have a beveled edge, so the door can close smoothly into the strike plate. A weak latch, wrong backset, or misaligned strike can cause the door to rattle or fail to close properly.

A latch is not the same as a deadbolt. It is mainly used for daily closing, not high-security locking by itself.

Deadbolt

A deadbolt is a stronger locking bolt that usually moves with a key, thumbturn, or internal mechanism. Unlike a spring latch, it does not retract simply because the door is pushed against the frame.

Deadbolts are commonly used on entrance doors and higher-security applications. They need accurate alignment with the strike plate because a partially extended deadbolt can damage the frame or reduce security.

When specifying a deadbolt, buyers should confirm bolt length, cylinder type, key function, door thickness, and whether the door is made from wood, steel, aluminum, or another material.

Cylinder

The cylinder is the part where the key is inserted. It contains the keyway and internal pin, disc, or other mechanism that recognizes the correct key.

Different projects may use single cylinders, double cylinders, thumbturn cylinders, profile cylinders, or smart-lock-related structures. Our door cylinder category supports different door-lock configurations according to market and project needs.

A cylinder should be selected together with the lock body. Even when two cylinders look similar from the outside, their length, cam type, finish, and key system may be different.

Faceplate and Strike Plate

The faceplate is the visible metal plate installed on the door edge around the latch or lock body. It protects the door edge and gives the lock a finished appearance.

The strike plate is installed on the door frame. It receives the latch bolt or deadbolt when the door closes. If the strike plate is not aligned correctly, the door may require extra force to close or lock.

For project supply, the faceplate and strike plate should match the finish of the handle, hinge, and other door hardware.

Handle, Lever, Knob, or Pull

The handle is the part that the user touches to operate the door. It may be a lever handle, knob, pull handle, recessed handle, or handle with integrated lock.

A lever handle is common for interior and commercial doors because it is easy to operate. A recessed handle may be used for sliding doors or modern space-saving designs.

When the handle and lock are combined, buyers should confirm whether the product operates a latch, controls a lock, or only provides a pulling function.

Spindle and Escutcheon

The spindle is the square metal bar connecting the two handles through the lock body or latch. When the handle turns, the spindle rotates and retracts the latch.

The escutcheon is the visible trim around the handle or cylinder. It protects the door surface and improves appearance. Some designs use a rose, long plate, or recessed plate depending on the door style.

These parts may seem small, but poor spindle fit or weak trim fixing can affect the complete user experience.

Screws, Springs, and Small Components

A lockset also includes fixing screws, internal springs, retaining clips, washers, covers, and other small components. These parts should not be ignored during purchasing.

Loose screws or weak springs can create handle sagging, poor latch return, or unstable locking. For hotels, apartments, schools, and commercial buildings, small-component consistency is important because the hardware is used repeatedly every day.

How We Support Door Lock Part Supply

Our factory has been established since 1993 and focuses on door hardware, lock systems, Public Security Hardware, and Bathroom Accessories. We support OEM and ODM production for door factories, supermarkets, estate developers, traders, hotels, public projects, and commercial spaces.

Our production equipment includes CNC controlling lathes, spark erosion machines, digital controlling milling machines, hydraulic pipe bending machines, cold-heating forming machines, and high-frequency welding machines. This allows us to support both standard products and customized hardware development.

Main Parts to Remember

The main door lock parts are the lock body, latch bolt, deadbolt, cylinder, faceplate, strike plate, handle, spindle, escutcheon, screws, and internal springs.

Not every lock includes every part. The correct structure depends on whether the door needs passage, privacy, entrance security, sliding operation, or smart access control.
